There are so many ways to be more sustainable these days, and more opportunities to save money on gas. To benefit from both, consider a Mazda hybrid SUV. Mazda currently has three hybrid SUVs in its lineup, which include two plug-in hybrid SUVs and a hybrid SUV:

Hybrid vs Plug In Hybrid SUVs

The main difference between hybrid vs plug in hybrid SUVs is how the battery is charged.

Both hybrid and PHEV SUVs have a gas engine and an electric motor. The difference is that hybrid vehicle batteries are charged via the internal combustion engine (gas engine) and regenerative braking. PHEV SUVs also use regenerative braking, but plugging them in is their main charging source.

The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid is a hybrid SUV, while the Mazda CX-70 PHEV and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV are plug-in hybrid SUVs.

Both hybrid SUVs and PHEV SUVs deliver eco-friendliness and fuel efficiency. You don’t have to stop for gas as often, saving you time and money.

Mazda PHEV SUVs

There are currently two Mazda PHEV SUVs to choose from. A two row SUV, the Mazda CX-70 PHEV, and a three row SUV, the Mazda CX-90 PHEV.

Both Mazda PHEV SUVs feature advanced e-SKYACTIV;-G PHEV technology and are powered by a 323-hp 2.5-liter gasoline engine with a 68-kW electric motor. They both get an EPA-estimated 56 MPGe/combined.

You can drive the Mazda CX-70 PHEV and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV shorter distances on fully electric power or longer drives on a combination of gas and electric power. They have an all-electric driving range of 26 miles, which is great for short commutes, running errands, or school drops. For longer distances, they have a 490-mile total driving range that uses both electricity and gas.

The Mazda CX-70 PHEV and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV have standard i-Activ AWD® (all-wheel drive). This system is always active and monitors the SUV’s performance in real time to automatically control torque distribution based on driving and road conditions.

To charge your Mazda PHEV SUV, you can use a Level 1 charger that plugs into a grounded 120V outlet or have a Level 2 charging station installed. With a Level 1 charger, your Mazda SUV reaches full charge in approximately 11 hours. With a Level 2 charger, the Mazda CX-70 PHEV and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV reach full charge in about 2.5 hours.

Mazda Hybrid SUV

The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid is the only hybrid SUV in Mazda’s current lineup. It’s powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a hybrid EV battery, and three electric motors. It gets an EPA-estimated 39 mpg/city, 37 mpg/highway, and 38 mpg/combined.

This hybrid SUV features an electronic AWD (e-AWD) system. When e-AWD is engaged, the rear motor powers the rear wheels.

The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid runs primarily on gas, but it can drive on all-electric power for short distances at low speeds, which reduces engine idling.

As noted, the battery on this hybrid SUV is recharged through the gas engine and regenerative braking. This SUV doesn’t need to be plugged in to charge the battery.

Hybrid and PHEV Mazda SUV Safety

Not only do the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid, Mazda CX-70 PHEV, and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV deliver good gas mileage and sustainable driving, but they’re safe to drive.

All three vehicles earned the 2024 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ distinction. They all feature the i-ACTIVSENSE® suite of safety features, which includes blindspot monitoring, smart brake support, adaptive cruise control, road keep assist, lane keep assist, and more.

Which Mazda SUV is Right for You?

Deciding between these three electrified Mazda SUVs can be challenging! We get it. All three feature the classy exterior and luxurious interior that Mazda vehicles are known for. They have excellent safety and performance features and get good gas mileage.

Ultimately, it comes down to preferences. If you prefer to have a longer driving all-electric distance, a PHEV SUV will be right for you. If you’d rather not have to plug in your SUV to charge it, the hybrid SUV is the way to go.

Size may also be a determining factor. The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid and the Mazda CX-70 PHEV each have two rows of seating for up to five. The Mazda CX-90 PHEV seats up to eight across three rows.

The good news is that all three Mazda SUVs are highly rated among both critics and drivers from Ashland and Richmond to Midlothian and Petersburg!
