Mazda currently has one hybrid SUV in its lineup. Hybrid vehicles have a gas engine as well as a battery and electric motor. They run primarily on gas but can drive on electric power for shorter distances and lower speeds. Hybrid vehicles have improved gas mileage as they can accelerate more without using extra gas. These vehicles don’t need to be plugged in because the battery is charged via regenerative braking.
Mazda CX-50 Hybrid: This hybrid SUV from Mazda has two rows of seating for up to five people. It’s powered by a 219-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and three electric motors. It gets an EPA-estimated 39 mpg/city, 37 mpg/highway, and 38 mpg/combined and can tow up to 1,500 pounds. This hybrid SUV has a standard electronic all-wheel drive (e-AWD) system and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) with trail and power modes.
Mazda currently has two PHEV SUVs in its lineup. Plug-in hybrid vehicles have an electric motor and a gas engine. PHEV vehicles have larger batteries and motors than mild hybrids and hybrid vehicles. This allows these vehicles to drive further distances using only electricity. When the battery is too low, the gas engine takes over so you can keep driving. PHEV vehicles use regenerative braking while you’re driving, but they also need to be plugged in to fully recharge the battery.
Mazda CX-90 PHEV: This PHEV SUV seats up to seven or eight passengers across three rows. It runs on a 323-hp e-SKYACTIV®-PHEV 2.5-liter engine along with an electric motor and a 17.8kWh battery. The Mazda CX-90 PHEV has an EPA-estimated all-electric driving range of 26 miles and a total driving range of 490 miles. It can be driven using just electricity or both gas and electricity. This PHEV SUV has an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 25 mpg/combined and 56 mpge/combined. i-ACTIV AWD® is standard.
Mazda CX-70 PHEV: The Mazda CX-70 PHEV seats up to five across two rows. An e-SKYACTIV®-PHEV 2.5-liter engine and 68 kW electric motor power this PHEV SUV. Collectively, they generate 323 hp. Like the Mazda CX-90 PHEV, the CX-70 PHEV has a 26-mile all-electric range and a 490-mile total driving range. It has standard rear-biased i-ACTIV AWD®
Though these sound interchangeable, electric vehicles and electrified vehicles are actually different.
Electric vehicles only have an electric motor and don’t have a traditional gas engine. They run purely on electricity and always need to be fully recharged.
Electrified vehicles have both an electric motor and a traditional gas engine. This allows these vehicles to run on both electricity and gas power. PHEV SUVs and hybrid SUVs fall into this category.
