How Long Does it Take to Charge a Plug In Hybrid SUV?

2022 Mazda MX-30 EV Charging

Electrified vehicles have gained popularity as there’s been a greater focus on reducing emissions and eco-friendly driving. Mazda has been a leader in the electrified SUV category, introducing two plug in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs and one hybrid SUV in recent years: the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid, the Mazda CX-70 PHEV, and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV.

While the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid doesn’t need to be plugged in to charge, the PHEV SUVs do, as the name suggests, need to be plugged in. The length of time needed to fully charge the Mazda CX-70 PHEV or the Mazda CX-90 PHEV battery depends on the charging method. Learn more about the time it takes to charge a Mazda PHEV.

Charging a Mazda PHEV SUV

A PHEV SUV is powered by both gas and electricity. They have a traditional internal combustion engine as well as an electric motor and battery. There are a few different ways a plug in hybrid SUV can be charged. You can charge your Mazda SUV at home with a Level 1 or Level 2 charger, or you can use a public charging station.

Charging Your PHEV SUV at Home

Level 1 charging uses a normal 110V/120V outlet. The benefit of Level 1 charging is that you can plug your Mazda CX-70 PHEV or Mazda CX-90 PHEV without needing to install a special charging station. Level 1 charging does take longer, so it’s recommended that you charge your plug in hybrid SUV overnight. The Department of Transportation notes that a Level 1 charger can charge a PHEV SUV battery to 80% in about 5 to 6 hours. For a full charge, it can take 8 to 12 hours.

Level 2 charging is much quicker. It does require the installation of a Level 2 charging station because it needs a 240V outlet. With a Level 2 charger, your Mazda CX-70 PHEV or Mazda CX-90 PHEV reaches 80% battery power in about 1 to 2 hours and full charge in about 4 to 6 hours.

Charging Your PHEV SUV in Public

Another option for charging your plug in hybrid SUV is using a public charging station. While you wouldn’t typically fully charge your Mazda SUV at a public charging station, these are great if your vehicle’s battery is running low. Public charging stations can provide a significant charge in approximately 20 to 40 minutes. As electrified vehicles become more prevalent, so do the number of public charging stations.

You can use your MyMazda app to find and navigate to a public charging station. You can also visit the ChargePoint website or use the CharPoint app to find public charging stations, see user reviews, and check pricing.

Driving a Plug In Hybrid SUV

Because plug in hybrid SUVs have both a gas engine and an electric motor and battery, you can drive on all-electric power or a combination of gas and electricity. The Mazda CX-70 PHEV and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV have an all-electric driving range of 26 miles, which means you can run errands and drive short commutes to and from work. These Mazda SUVs get an EPA-estimated 56 MPGe combined.

For longer drives, you can start with all-electric power, and your PHEV SUV will automatically switch to gas when the battery power dips too low. With daily charging, drivers from Richmond and Ashland to Chester and Petersburg can reduce the time and money spent at the pump by driving longer between fill-ups.

One of the biggest benefits of driving a PHEV SUV is the reduced emissions. When operating in EV mode, the Mazda CX-70 PHEV and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV don’t give off any emissions from their tailpipes. When the gas engine is used, these Mazda SUVs perform similarly to a hybrid vehicle. They consume less gas and produce fewer emissions.

While the Mazda CX-70 PHEV and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV can be driven solely on electric power, they can’t operate without gas in the tank.
