How Do Vehicles Earn IIHS Safety Awards?

Vehicles undergo rigorous crash and safety testing to qualify for a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. Cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs must earn top ratings for front and side crash tests and pedestrian front crash prevention assessments.

The 2025 Top Safety Pick+ award criteria include:

  • Good rating in the small overlap front test
  • Good rating in the updated moderate overlap front test
  • Good rating in the updated side test
  • Acceptable or good headlights standard
  • Acceptable or good in the pedestrian front crash prevention test

The completion of these tests proves that Mazda vehicles are safe to drive, helping to give you peace of mind during school drop-offs, commutes, road trips, and even running errands.

“The success of our awards program depends on automakers’ commitment to safety,” IIHS President David Harkey said in a press release. “Kudos to Mazda for meeting this challenge with eight TOP SAFETY PICK+ winners, the most of any brand.”

Mazda vehicles also performed well in the newest IIHS crash test, which required heightened rear-seat occupant protection. All the Mazda cars, SUVs, and PHEV SUVs tested earned the top rating of Good thanks to standard rear seatbelt pretensioners, load limiters, and advanced airbags.

Mazda Makes Some of the Safest Cars and SUVs

“Mazda’s dedication to keeping our customers and their passengers safe in the pursuit of eliminating traffic fatalities is evidenced in these latest awards from IIHS,” said Mazda North American Operations President and CEO Tom Donnelly in a press release.

All Mazda cars, SUVs, and PHEV SUVs come with the i-ACTIVSENSE® suite of standard and available vehicle safety features. These include advanced crash avoidance systems, pedestrian monitoring, and blindspot and rearview monitoring.

The i-ACTIVSENSE® technology helps keep you alert and aware of your surroundings without taking your focus from the road. It uses radars and cameras to monitor and alert you to possible hazards or collisions. This includes both active and passive vehicle safety features.

Active vehicle safety features alert the driver with visuals and sounds to help avoid hazards and accidents.

Passive vehicle safety features help reduce damage and protect the driver and passengers in the event of a collision. Mazda passive safety features include seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Airbag Systems, the rigid SKYACTIV®-Body with ring structure, and more.

Some of the vehicle safety features found in all Mazda SUVs and cars include:

  • Smart brake support
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Electronic stability control
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Backup camera
  • Rearview monitoring system
  • LATCH system
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Mazda radar cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Parking sensors
  • Adaptive front lighting
  • Front cross-traffic alert
  • Multiple SRS airbags

Mazda vehicle designs even take automotive safety into consideration. To help reduce fatigue and improve agility and comfort, the driving position is configured for your joints to bend at a natural angle. The displays are positioned to provide you with access to information without distracting you, allowing you to concentrate on driving. The accelerator pedal in Mazda vehicles is an “organ type” that connects your foot movement to the pedal. This helps reduce leg fatigue, especially when driving longer distances.
