Are Electric Cars Reliable?

2022 Mazda MX-30

Electric vehicles are more affordable and available than ever in Ashland and beyond, with almost every popular automaker offering a hybrid or electric model in their lineup. Mazda has released the Mazda MX-30 EV, a fully-electric crossover SUV with a range of 100 miles. If you’ve never driven an EV before, you’re probably wondering: are electric cars reliable compared to gasoline-powered cars? The short answer is yes — electric vehicles lack a lot of the same parts as gasoline vehicles, which means there are fewer components to maintain and look after. Check out the guide below from the service team at Whitten Brothers Mazda for more details!

Are Electric Vehicles Cheaper to Maintain?

We’ve answered the question of electric car reliability, but did you know that EVs cost less to maintain as well? It’s true! According to the Yale Climate Connection, electric vehicles cost up to 40% less to maintain than their gasoline-powered counterparts. As we discussed above, there are a lot of parts on gasoline cars that EVs don’t need to run, which means you’ll be making fewer trips to the service center for regular maintenance. Here are a few routine services you won’t have to make when you upgrade to an EV:

  • Oil changes
  • Gasket replacements
  • Belt replacements
  • Spark plugs
  • Cooling system flushes
  • Engine air filters

How Do I Maintain an Electric Vehicle?

While EVs require less maintenance than gasoline-powered cars, you’ll still have to take proper care of it. Your owner’s manual will have more information on when to come in for service appointments, but here are some general tips for keeping an EV in top condition on the Fredericksburg roads:

  • Make sure your battery is regularly topped off, since your EV’s range can decrease if you’re constantly driving on a low battery.
  • An EV’s tires tend to wear out a bit more quickly than gasoline cars, since their large batteries make them heavier. You may be coming in more frequently for wheel alignments and tire rotations.
  • EVs don’t require motor oil, but they do still need coolant, brake fluid, and windshield wiper fluid.
  • It’s a good idea to stay on top of software updates to make sure your EV is running on the latest technology available.
