Mazda has been successfully selling cars in Mexico for 6 years. In fact it sold more than 25K vehicles and acquired more than 3% of the market share. So it is no surprise to Whitten Brothers Mazda, to hear that Mazda Motor Corp. has decided to open up Mazda Motor Manufacturing de Mexico, a new facility in Salamanca, Guanajuato.
The new plant is a joint venture between the Japanese automaker and Sumitomo Corp and will start producing the MAZDA2 and MAZDA3 in the spring of 2014, with a capacity of 140,000 units per year.
Among the motivation to build this new facility, Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda Motor Corp.'s chairman, president and CEO, explains that it will prompt the automaker's growth in both Central and South America. "The state of Guanajuato and the Sumitomo Group have a lot in common. Both were established over 400 years ago and developed through a history of mining. We also share the value of respect for people and the desire to contribute to society and grow together with our partners1also explains Kazuo Ohmori, Sumitomo's executive VP.
This joint venture will most certainly have a positive impact on the economic growth of Mexico. And to show support to the project, many key players were present at the new plant's groundbreaking in Salamanca. The mayor of Salamanca, Japan's ambassador to Mexico, the general director of ProMexico, the Guanajuato state governor and the president of the Economic Commission of the State Congress, were among the nearly 400 people present for the event.
The Mazda models to be produced in Mexico will be similar to 2 models currently produced in Japan and will be made only for the Central and South American markets.
